The Swedish network for speculative fiction was established in 2015 and gathers researchers interested in different kinds of non-mimetic storytelling. The broad genre of speculative fiction includes science fiction and fantasy, but also texts that in less radical ways present alternatives to reality. The material the research members take an interest in (written texts, films, tv-series, games, etc.) thus depict and explore worlds that can be far distanced from our own, or that alter conditions through details only.

The overarching goal of the network is to demonstrate the value of speculative fiction as narrative form, and how it contributes to understandings of contemporary questions and debates in a variety of fields.

Network members meet twice a year to discuss ongoing research, create further bases for cooperation, and plan for larger projects. Among earlier activities are the international conference Time and History (Karlstad University, 2021), and a subsequent themed issue of Fafnir (2/2022), and the anthology Populating the Future (2023).

News about members' publications, CFPs, and other information is disseminated via the network's email-list. To join the network, contact one of its members (see the link Members in the top menu).
